I'm flying with Southwest soon. Is this actually airline approved? It looks a bit bulky in the photos.

Yes! Zipped up, it's 18x11x11, fitting Delta, United & Southwest under-seat rules. The expansion is for during flight. I keep it zipped for boarding, then unzip in the air for more room.
Can I actually open the expansion sides while the bag is under the seat during the flight?

Definitely! Once cruising, I unzip the side facing me. It lets my cat stretch into a "suite" under the seat instead of being cramped. It keeps them so much calmer and quieter on long flights!
My dog is exactly 15 lbs. Should I get the Large or go up to the XL?

Measure first! Fits pets up to 15"L x 9"H. Weight is just a guide. Measure your pet while lying down. If they fit these specs, it's perfect for the cabin. For non-flight use, consider the XL.
How are the zippers? My cat is a bit of an escape artist and I don't want her getting out mid-flight.
